2011 Nail Polish Trends
5 HOT Nail Trends!
Want to make a bold statement this party season? Forget the false eyelashes and fiery red lipstick and say hello to 2011's hottest trend- nail art! Stand out from the crowd with what New York Fashion Week claims to be the most wanted 'accessory' of the moment. While the nude trend is still admittedly a firm favourite among major NYFW shows (including Marc by Marc, Catherine Malandrino and Thakoon), we spotted five eye-catching trends that had that little extra 'WOW' factor! Let me talk you through these special beauties:
1) Moon Manicures: You can see why they're called 'moon' manicures! Inject a bit of retro into your ensemble by opting for this fun and funky nail trend. Take a leaf out of Butter London's book and rock the nude theme with a twist! Or if you'd rather mirror Ruffian's 1940's French foreign legion-themed collection then why not embrace the monogram trend with a rounded black tip- retro at its best with a hint of vintage!
The tip: A steady hand may not be enough to get these moon shapes looking crisp- so why not invest in a nail art pen to give you more control than a nail brush might give you! Priced at just a fiver on average, it won't hurt your bank balance but will certainly help you steal the limelight this party season!
2) Metallics & Gold Foil: Nothing says 'I'm ready to party!' like a generous sprinkle of sparkle, be it on your dress, eyes, or indeed- nails! Add as little or as much shimmer and/or metallica as you want with this trend to give off a beautiful earthy, fairy vibe! Here at Candy Nails, we have a range of metallic, glitter and shimmer sheer nail polishes that will tickle your fancy, most of the Jessica Nails variation. Available in a wide range of colours and textures, why not mix 'n' match to create some truly unique, fabulous tones! Dashing Diva's Patty Yankee used gold foil to achieve this trend but a deliberately chipped gold polish does the trick too! Add a bit of black and you'll be rockin' this season's notorious black and gold theme!
The tip: Begin with a layer of clear basecoat then messily apply gold foil onto your nail tips, with the help of Candy Nail's slant tweezer. Wait until this dries then crumble away the excess gold foil- watch as the magic happens! Ensure its lasting effect by applying a layer of clear topcoat. But if you're not keen on using gold foil to mirror this trend then do not fear- gold polish is here! Use a small piece of plastic to block the parts of your nail that you don't wish to paint and randomly reposition it as you apply gold polish to the tips with short strokes. The result? Offbeat, distressed goldy tones, perfect for the party season!
3) Pop Art Graphics: Consider yourself a free spirit? Then play with patterns and flirt with bright colours with this creative trend! Butter London's Nonie Creme made us of bold, bright pastels, along with electric blue to reflect the wonderfully eclectic vibe present at Betsey Johnson. The fab thing about this trend is just how adventurous it can be; there's no limit to what you can do with the many colours and patterns you can think of- the possibilities are endless! Take China G;aze, for instance. They showed their wild side with a colourful cheetah pattern- a real trend-ticker this A/W season! Minx, on the other hand, looked super cute at Alice + Olivia with candy-inspired polka dot detail- incredibly sweet and ever-so-playful!
The tip: For great precision, we recommend a good Minx salon. But if you're a ruthless individual confident in your nail art abilities then do invest in some nail precision pens and let your imagination run wild!
4) A Study in Neutrals: This trend is possibly one of the safest trends to try out and is a sure reminder of beautiful Spring days. But, as always, some of our favourite nail tycoons took it to the next level and what a pretty level it is! Dashing Diva's Patti Yankee polished daring pointed black and white French Chevron nails for Jose Duran, while Prabal Gurung whipped up a deliciously gorgeous pale beige, intersected by a very thin coral line- minimalist but very effective! Sometimes, a little definitely goes a long way.
The tip: Don't match the nude shade too closely to your skin tone, lest you want to look like a mannequin! Instead, go a few shades lighter or darker and choose a colour with a high gloss. Jessica's 'Creamy Caramel' does the job just fine!
5) Decals: Diamonds sure are a girl's best friend! And while this array of blingy nail art might not always involve real diamonds, it's both eye-catching and super glamorous- making it a girl's best friend whichever way you look at it! From intense sparkle to a single diamond decal, this trend is definitely one to watch out for and adds instant glamour to any occasion! CND nail artist Kristina Estabrooks used an amazing combination of crushed glass and Swarovski crystals to get that special glint- just magical! Feel free to combine glitter nail polish for added oomph.
The tip: Some heavy-duty nail glue will ensure your decals stay put. Top off with a fast-drying topcoat and you're good to go! If you like the sound of this trend but aren't quite ready to commit to these magical decals then why not opt for polishes filled with large pieces of glitter for some subtle glitz and glamour!
